Nine herbs. Nothing hidden.
Sweet and cooling, the saunf passed round after every Indian meal.
Jeera. Warm, nutty and familiar from the tadka.
Carom seed. Sharp and thyme-like.
A slow, steady warmth.
Naturally sweet. It softens triphala's bitterness.
Cool and fresh on the finish.
Peppery and aromatic.
Asafoetida, a tiny amount, compounded with wheat flour as hing usually is.
The kahwa way
Simmered, then rested. Triphala needs the short boil to give up its taste.
- Boil one cup of water About 200 ml in a small pan.
- Add a level teaspoon Stir it in and let it simmer for 1–2 minutes.
- Cover and rest Turn off the flame, cover the pan and steep for 2–3 minutes.
- Strain and sip warm If you add honey, wait until the cup is warm, not hot.
For the cup after a meal
The kitchen spices Indian homes have always reached for after a heavy meal, saunf, jeera, ajwain and hing, brewed with triphala into one warm cup.

Questions, answered plainly
Why does it taste a little bitter?
That is triphala. Its three fruits between them carry five of the six tastes, and bitter and astringent are the strongest. Saunf and mulethi are there to soften it; a little honey helps too.
When should I drink it?
About half an hour after a meal is the traditional time for saunf and jeera. Many people keep it to after dinner.
Does it have caffeine?
No. There is no tea leaf in it.
Can I drink it every day?
Yes, one or two cups a day is how it is meant to be used. If your stools become loose, have less.
Can I drink it if I'm pregnant or on medication?
Triphala is usually avoided in pregnancy, so please don't drink this while pregnant unless your doctor says it's fine. On any regular medication, ask your doctor first.
