Eleven herbs. Nothing hidden.
The "three pungents": dry ginger, black pepper and long pepper, in equal parts.
Malabar tamarind, the sour rind used in Kerala fish curry.
Sweet-warm, to round the heat.
Earthy and golden.
A bitter leaf. Chewed on its own, it briefly blunts the taste of sweet.
Peppery and aromatic.
Citrus-fresh.
Sweet and cooling, to balance the peppers.
A cool finish.
A floral lift.
The kahwa way
A short simmer brings out the fruits and peppers; resting it covered keeps the lemongrass and mint.
- Boil one cup of water About 200 ml.
- Add a level teaspoon Simmer for 1–2 minutes.
- Cover and rest Flame off, lid on, 2–3 minutes.
- Strain and sip warm A squeeze of lemon suits it.
For a sharp start to the day
A bold, peppery-sour kahwa for people who like their morning cup to wake them up. Not a gentle blend.

Questions, answered plainly
It's quite strong. Is that right?
Yes. Trikatu is three peppers, and triphala is sour and bitter. If it is too much, use half a teaspoon, or add honey once the cup is warm.
Does it have caffeine?
No. There is no tea leaf in it.
Can I drink it on an empty stomach?
If you have a sensitive stomach, no: have it with or after breakfast. The peppers can be sharp on an empty stomach.
How many cups a day?
One is enough for most people. The classical texts warn against taking pungent herbs like pippali in excess.
Can I drink it if I'm pregnant or on medication?
Not in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Triphala and trikatu are both usually avoided then. On any regular medication, ask your doctor before drinking it daily.
